My best week was on Internet
Matters was last week Thursday, April 4, 2017 attending the Cyber Security
event organised by KPMG. Apart from starting on time with a New Nigerian
Attitude (NNGA), the only flaw was that they did not envisage the turnout of
participants. 90% of the session had a full house and attention was rapt. The
speakers had been careful chosen to deliver on the topics and subjects of discussion.
It was awesome.
Yours truly did not get the outline
of event cards due to the shortage, however, I had a full day of learning what,
who, where and how of Cyber Security as related to the globe, Africa or
Nigeria. The need to pay attention is clear; we need to start preparing today.
The KPMG Cyber Security Conference aimed
at discussing security as it affects global sectors, organisations, advancing
technology systems with vulnerabilities that may expose its flaws or loopholes
to attacks resulting in financial loss. With the theme, Security and Resilience
in a Digital World, it addressed cyber security and resilience as it affects
financial institutions, government, private bodies and individuals.
Cyber Attacks may not make the
headline as we speak, but it is not denying that a lot of firms, organisation,
association, banks, etc, are suffering in silence. I recall that I had the opportunity
to attend a TLD-OPS at a Security meeting in Copenhagen, Denmark organised by
the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) and delivered a
perspective summary. It was breath-taking to note the capabilities developed by
KPMG in Nigeria. The burning question was the role of government in the
approach to promoting a guideline for Cyber Security.
The event had five sessions with panellist
addressing issues and questions from the private and public actors.
Presentations sessions were interactive enough to teach a layman what needs to
be done often to enhance developing countries like Nigeria prepare for the
inevitable.
The Game Session gave participants
an opportunity to reflect on a real life or a pseudo real life cyber security
attack. Participants had opportunity to respond to an attack.
The launch of a publication titled;
“Building Cyber Security and Resilience in a Digital World” drew the curtain-call
before the response of government.
Mr. Okeke, representing Dr. Isa
Ali Ibrahim Pantami, Director General of the National Information Technology
Development Agency (NITDA) was on ground to state the approach and
collaboration of the agency under its new leadership to make the difference in
cyber-space stating its reaction to a similar attack on INEC.
One of the Exhibitors, Microsoft represented by EduAbasi Chukwuweike, also presented its Azure Rights Management Services. It’s designed to protect,

became simple.
CEOs and VPs from the
telecommunications, financial institutions, manufacturing and other
stakeholders with and interest in the cyber security space participated at the
event. It was not just a gathering for security experts, it consultants, stakeholders
and CTOs, it witnessed a gathering of member of the Cyber Security Association of Nigeria (CSEAN) from across Nigeria.
