In a letter sent round to the membership, the ISOC President will be looking forward to a new leadership soon. It is expected that the process must have commenced with the release of the letter below. Learn more about the society on www.isoc.org.

---------------------------
Dear ISOC Chapters,

The Internet Society’s 25th anniversary year has been a milestone year in more ways than one. We have celebrated our solidarity and strength together and with confidence in our Mission. We have demonstrated deep respect for our roots by hosting a highly successful Internet Hall of Fame, whilst welcoming the future by honoring our 25 young innovators under 25. Our InterCommunity event this year was truly impressive — circling the world in 24hours by connecting 56 different “nodes” in 112 countries on six continents.

Together, we have demonstrated how, as a global community, we can use the Internet to strengthen the Internet.

At the recent Board meeting in Singapore there were some great examples of the work that has taken place. We had an amazing report of the work in Asia, a report from our Chapter in Singapore and a report from Raul on the extraordinary work done by our Chapters. Our OMAC meeting was lively and productive and ISOC’s interaction with the IETF was likewise productive and forward-leaning.

It seems clear to me that the Internet Society is at a crossroads: it is strong; you are strong and focused on the future. At this juncture, it feels natural and right for me to pass the CEO baton to the next generation of ISOC leadership. So, it was with some emotion that I informed the Board in Singapore that I would not seek another extension of my contract in 2018.

This community will be very hard for me to leave. Indeed, I can’t ever imagine not supporting the work of the Internet Society. All the work we do, guided by our vision of an Internet for everyone, is of urgent importance. I do look forward, though, to spending time in a quieter mode, and dedicating some energy to family needs.

The Board was gracious and supportive of my decision and committed to commencing a search expeditiously. The Board has assured me that it will be as transparent as possible with respect to its plans, will communicate with you directly on next steps and keep you informed throughout the process. You should expect this to take some time but you have my commitment to continue the work of the Internet Society and to do my utmost to prepare for a smooth transition while the Board conducts its search.

As always, do not hesitate to reach out to me with any questions and concerns. My door—and email—is always open to each of you.

Kathy Brown

AFRINIC-27 comes alive in Lagos, Nigeria.

Arrival and Collection of materials for the AFRINIC-27 kicked-off today at one of Africa's prestigious hotel, the Renaissance Hotel, GRA -Ikeja, Lagos. The event is expected to start Monday, November 27, 2017 to Friday, December 1, 2017. The host, Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA), is the association and registry in charge of the Country Code Top Level Domain (ccTLD), .ng (pronounced dotNG).

According to one of the crew of AFRINIC, it holds two open public policy meetings every year in various locations throughout Africa, its service region. AFRINIC meetings provide a unique opportunity for Internet-related individuals and organisations to gather and discuss the policies governing Internet number resource distribution in the African region, to share technical knowledge, and to attend workshops and tutorials. This is also extended to members of the media with passion to learn and inform the public on the activities of AFRINIC in Africa.

Plenary sessions bring the various stakeholder groups of the African ICT community together, including the Af* organisations and ISPs, for public policy discussions, presentations and stakeholder panel sessions on:
* The allocation and management of IP addresses and ASNs;
* Technical and Internet governance issues;
* Networking, peering and security;
* Domain names, cyber laws and registrars issues;
* Updates of the African registry operations, RIR, IANA, and ICANN updates.

About AFRINIC
Prior to its creation, all IP Addresses were managed by APNIC, ARIN, and RIPE NCC. The mission for creating AFRINIC was to "serve the African Community by providing professional and efficient management of Internet number technology usage and development, and promoting Internet self-governance."

The African Network Information Centre (AFRINIC) is a non-governmental and not-for-profit membership based organization. Its main role is to serve as the Regional Internet Registry (RIR) for the African region. AFRINIC was recognized by ICANN as a functioning regional registry and information center in 2004.

AFRINIC is responsible for the distribution and management of Internet number resources - IP address space (IPv4 and IPv6) and Autonomous System Numbers (ASNs) - in its service region, which includes Africa and the Indian Ocean region.

Internet number resources are allocated to AFRINIC and the four other RIRs by Public Technical Identifiers (PTI). PTI is responsible for coordinating the Internet’s unique identifiers and performs the IANA functions, which include coordination of domain names, Internet number resources and protocol parameters.

AFRINIC-27
Anyone can propose a policy and participate in the discussions during the dedicated Policy Development sessions at AFRINIC and AIS Meetings as well as on the policy discussion (rpd) mailing list.
